Pick a mission

What will they talk about at dinner?

A bird with impossibly long legs? A tiny world under a microscope? A pineapple growing under glass? Build a holiday around discoveries that belong to the children too.

  1. Lagoon detectives
  2. Science, then seaside
  3. Make, taste, remember
  4. A little braver
  5. Volcano detectives

Room to grow

Different ages. Different adventures.

Interests, confidence and energy matter as much as birthdays. These are planning ideas, not admission rules.

Little wonderers / ages 3-5

Short discoveries, colour hunts, sand play and simple making. Keep familiar meals, naps and a quick way back.

Try: a small nature mission and a relaxed craft session.

Curious explorers / ages 6-9

Questions, clues and hands-on challenges. One main mission, with time to play and a pause before dinner.

Try: lagoon detective work, science or a fruit-growing story.

Young trailblazers / ages 10-14

A little more independence within agreed supervision. Deeper questions, photography and a challenge chosen together.

Try: volcano discovery, a suitable ropes course or ocean observation.

SIBLINGS DO NOT HAVE TO DO THE SAME THING

We can propose a shared starting point with an easier or more challenging version. Tell us about toddlers, older teens and any individual support needs when enquiring.

Algarve: the outdoor chapter

The lighthouse on Culatra, in the Ria Formosa island system.
The lighthouse on Culatra, Ria Formosa. Island crossings and visits are optional, subject to conditions. Destination photography; a lighthouse visit is not a programme inclusion.

LAGOON. SAND. SUNSHINE.

The outdoors becomes a story: spot a bird, follow the tide from a safe path, build something in the sand and finish with a family meal.

Prefer one coast, not a daily cross-region drive. Match the base to the missions you choose.

ONE GOOD MISSION. PLENTY OF FREE PLAY.

MISSION 01

RIA FORMOSA / NATURE + DISCOVERY

Who left those footprints in the mud?

A little egret feeding in the shallows at Ria Formosa.
Little egret in Ria Formosa. Observe quietly and keep your distance. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

THE CHILD’S MISSION

Find three different shapes: a bird’s beak, a leaf and a ripple. Draw them; leave the real things where they belong.

THE FAMILY EXPERIENCE

A short guided nature walk on a selected route, such as Quinta de Marim, with binoculars, shade breaks and time for questions.

Suggested focus: ages 6-14, with a shorter colour-and-shape version for younger children. Indicative activity window: 1.5-2.5 hours, excluding transfers. Confirm opening, terrain, toilets, weather and any tickets before travel.

MISSION 02

FARO / A CURIOUS HALF-DAY

A very small world. A very big question.

Children and an adult exploring a microscope. Illustrative photograph.
Hands-on science. Illustrative photograph / Yan Krukau; not a photograph of the Faro centre.

At Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, the sea becomes a starting point for discovery. Explore the exhibitions, then leave space for a waterfront snack and a relaxed family finish.

ASK THIS

What could you learn about the sea without getting into the water? Bring one question and leave with a new one.

PARENT PLAN

Confirm workshops separately: age range, language, duration and adult participation. Admission alone does not guarantee a place.

MISSION 03

A CREATIVE FAMILY DAY / BOTH DESTINATIONS

MAKE. TASTE. REMEMBER.

Children making colourful paper crafts at a table. Illustrative photograph.
Children making art. Illustrative photograph / Artem Podrez; the pictured activity is not a booked ZERO workshop.

Let the souvenir be something they made. Request a family craft session, tile-inspired painting or a child-friendly cooking activity with a suitable local host.

ONE IDEA, MANY AGES

Younger children can explore colours and shapes. Older children can design a pattern, follow a recipe or document the story behind a local ingredient.

This is a bespoke programme concept. The host, venue, materials, age suitability and supervision must be confirmed. Cooking needs advance allergy arrangements; tasting is optional. Allow roughly 1.5-2 hours for the activity.

Mission 04: a little braver

MISSION 04 / OUTDOOR CHALLENGE

A LITTLE BRAVER.

A challenge should feel exciting, not compulsory. Choose an adventure at the right level, and celebrate the attempt as much as the finish.

Their level. Their moment.

Parque Aventura Lagos is one option to investigate for a western-Algarve day. Confirm the selected course’s current age, height and equipment rules directly, plus the adult supervision required.

Keep the return relaxed. For a child who prefers not to climb, agree a separate ground-based activity with an adult. Do not assume siblings can use the same course.

BEFORE YOU PROMISE THE ADVENTURE

Check tickets, the exact course, harness fit, briefing language and weather policy. This is an optional day, not part of the eastern-Algarve mini-break.

Three nights in the Algarve

A little break. A lot to bring home.

Three nights / four days. An illustrative private family stay around Faro and Olhão, with one main mission each day and generous play or rest time.

  1. SETTLE IN

Arrive, check the family room or villa and let everyone reset. Keep dinner easy.

  2. LAGOON DAY

A selected nature route and a child-sized discovery challenge. A quiet afternoon or supervised beach play if conditions suit.

  3. CHOOSE ONE

Science in Faro or a private creative session. Add a relaxed meal; do not pack in a second major outing.

  4. TAKE IT HOME

A final breakfast, a favourite-moment drawing and an unhurried departure.

Prefer a first-waves version? Choose a western-Algarve base near Lagos or Luz and replace the nature or science day with confirmed beginner surf lessons. Accommodation, transfers and activities are quoted individually.

AZORES

ASK WHY.

AN ISLAND FULL OF QUESTIONS.

Why is there steam? How does a pineapple grow? What lives in the Atlantic? Follow curiosity through green landscapes, local flavours and a world that rewards looking closely.

MISSION 05

FURNAS / LANDSCAPES + SCIENCE

The ground has a story.

LOOK. ASK. LEARN.

The geothermal landscape at Furnas, São Miguel.
Geothermal activity at Furnas, São Miguel. Look from designated visitor areas. Visitors stay on designated paths and behind barriers.

Build a Furnas day around a short geothermal observation stop and an enquiry-led visit to OMIC, the Azores Microbial Observatory. It introduces the tiny living world associated with the islands’ natural environments.

THE MISSION

Draw the landscape, then ask how scientists study things too small to see. A microscope activity or guided session must be specifically booked; it is not assumed with admission.

Stay behind barriers; do not touch water, vents or hot ground. For strong-smell sensitivity, plan a shorter or indoor alternative. Thermal bathing is not included.

MISSION 06

SÃO MIGUEL / FROM GREENHOUSE TO STORY

Pineapples growing inside a greenhouse at the Arruda plantation.
Pineapples growing at the Augusto Arruda plantation, São Miguel.

Does a pineapple grow on a tree?

At Augusto Arruda’s plantation, discover the glasshouses and look for different stages of growth. Turn the visit into a drawing challenge: fruit, leaves, soil and the shape of the greenhouse.

Ask about a suitable visiting time and the route for your family. Any child-friendly fruit tasting is arranged separately and is not assumed with admission. Dietary requirements still matter.

Extend the theme with a tea-growing story at Gorreana or a private food activity, if suitable and confirmed. Children do not need to taste anything to take part.

MISSION 07

SÃO MIGUEL / WILD LIFE, REAL CONDITIONS

The ocean does not follow a script.

Common dolphins swimming in Azorean waters.
Common dolphins in Azorean waters. Wildlife sightings vary; a photograph is not a guarantee of sightings.

ON THE WATER

A whale-and-dolphin observation trip can be requested after confirming the exact vessel, child suitability, lifejackets, facilities and sea conditions.

ON LAND

Choose a coastal lookout, ocean-themed story or science visit instead. It is a full programme option, not an afterthought.

Ask about current minimum ages, duration, motion comfort, toilets, supervision and cancellation rules. No sightings are guaranteed. Follow the crew’s wildlife instructions; swimming with wildlife is not part of this offer.

START ON SAND. FIND YOUR BALANCE.

Surf, at their level

Two coastlines. One first adventure.

Choose a children’s session or private family coaching, with a qualified local school selecting the beach and conditions. The aim is confidence, play and a good first encounter with the ocean.

ALGARVE

LAGOS + LUZ / FAMILY SURF

The Surf Experience offers children’s sessions and private family coaching. Start with beach practice and gentle whitewater chosen by the instructor. A western-Algarve base keeps this version of the holiday relaxed.

The Surf Experience: kids + families

SÃO MIGUEL

A BEACH CHOSEN FOR THE DAY

Azores Surf Center offers complete-beginner and private family lessons. Santa Bárbara is one possible setting; the location varies with the season and conditions. Build in time for a snack and a quiet afternoon.

Azores Surf Center: lessons

MATCH THE LESSON TO THE CHILD

Share age, swimming ability and water confidence. Confirm minimum ages, coach-to-child ratio, language, suitable boards and wetsuits, insurance and who supervises each child.

Book the lesson before promising the day. The school confirms the surf conditions and rebooking terms; keep a beach or indoor alternative ready. Younger siblings and children who prefer the sand can have their own activity with an adult.

Five nights on São Miguel

A curious island. A sensible rhythm.

Five nights / six days. Choose a suitable family base around Ponta Delgada or Lagoa. Confirm the accommodation and daily driving before choosing the final order.

  1. HELLO, ISLAND

Arrive, settle and keep the first evening familiar.

  2. LITTLE SCIENTISTS

Enquire about Expolab in Lagoa, then a relaxed meal and free time.

  3. LAKE DISCOVERY

A scenic Sete Cidades day with a short chosen stop and a drawing challenge.

  4. VOLCANO STORIES

Furnas and a confirmed OMIC visit. One main region; no cross-island checklist.

  5. CHOOSE YOUR FINALE

Pineapples and crafts, a beginner surf lesson or an ocean outing.

  6. THE WAY HOME

Breakfast, a final passport entry and a planned airport transfer.

Keep a rest window every day. The sequence changes with bookings, weather and family energy. Add nights to include more missions without stacking them into a single day.

Rain is a plot twist

A quiet reading moment. Illustrative photograph / Artem Podrez.

RAIN CHANGES THE PLAN. NOT THE MOOD.

An indoor discovery. A creative hour. A story in a quiet corner. Keep another kind of good day ready.

ALGARVE

Ask about Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, a pre-arranged craft session or a quiet family activity at your base.

SÃO MIGUEL

Ask about Expolab in Lagoa, OMIC when already in Furnas, or a separately arranged creative session near your base.

Indoor does not mean available without booking. Confirm opening, session times, age suitability and tickets before promising the day to the children.

Room for every child

ZERO / FAMILY COMFORT

THERE ISN’T ONE WAY TO JOIN IN.

Tell us how your child enjoys discovering the world. We can build a brief around mobility, sensory, communication and dietary needs - and be clear about what providers can confirm.

A quieter version

Shorter sessions, less noise, fewer surprises and a place to pause.

A clearer plan

Simple written steps, photos in advance where available and a preferred communication format.

A different route

Stroller or wheelchair requirements, distances, surfaces, toilets and space to transfer.

A familiar routine

Food requirements, meal times, rest, comfort items and the option to stop early.

No specialist care or universal accessibility is implied. Agree any additional support, provider qualifications, venue suitability and scope before booking. A child can always choose not to take part.

Back to contents

For the grown-ups

BOOK FIRST. PROMISE LATER.

A good family programme is exciting for the children and clear for the adults. These points belong in the written proposal.

  1. The right fit

Children’s ages, interests, height where relevant, swimming confidence and any mobility, sensory, communication or dietary needs.

  2. Confirmed places

Current opening, activity availability, tickets, language, duration and the provider’s age, height, equipment and adult-participation rules.

  3. Transport that fits

Child-seat requirements based on the children’s details, stroller space, luggage, pick-up points and manageable driving days.

  4. Clear supervision

Parents or agreed responsible adults remain involved. This is not an unsupervised drop-off club. Any childcare is a separate, explicitly agreed service.

  5. A plan for change

Weather alternatives, emergency contacts, relevant assistance needs, provider safety arrangements and the cancellation or rebooking terms.

Share practical needs first; avoid sending unnecessary sensitive information in an initial enquiry. Prices and inclusions are confirmed case by case.
